Sorrento Lingue and Alfred State College are pleased to announce our study abroad Italian Semester program for spring of 2011 in Sorrento. This is expected to be a seamless program that will allow students to spend their spring semester taking the following courses:

Architecture Studies

  • Studio Sorrento (6 credits)
  • Archaeology - Cities of fire (3 credits) [by Sorrento Lingue staff]
  • Foundation & Concrete Construction (3 credits) [online]
  • Architectural Photography (3 credits)

Electives (chooses one) [by Sorrento Lingue staff]

  • Italian 1 (3 credits)
  • Western Civilization since 1500: a comparative prospective (3 credits)
  • In the heart of the Art: from Greek Art to Italian Baroque (3 credits)

Total credits: 18

Business Administration Studies


  • International Business (3 credits)
  • Business in the European Union (3 credits)
  • Strategic & Creative Problem Solving (3 credits) (online)
  • Strategic Marketing (3 credits) (online)

These courses are taught by Alfred State College faculty unless otherwise noted. Students will also be able to customize their curriculum of study by taking online courses through Alfred State or any other institution.

Courses programs

BUAD 8013 International Business

This course is an application of theoretical approaches to the globalization of business. Major concepts, tools, and processes will be explored through lecture, readings, team activities, and case study applications. Major topics include the examination of how businesses and managers focus and succeed in the global economy including an overview of the economic, political, legal, social, and cultural systems involved. Emphasis is given to the scope and theories of international business, the framework for international transactions, relations with host countries and host cultures, global business strategies, and the contrasting international management and ethical issues managers may face. Guest lecturers and field trips are planned for students enrolled in the study abroad program. 

 

BUAD 6213 – Business in the European Union

This course is intended to provide the student with a comprehensive introduction to business in the European Union. The course describes how economic, political and social factors interrelate, and influence business in Europe. Students will use a framework to research select bachelor business administration program outcomes (economics, communication, management, and marketing) from different European Union member state’s perspective. Guest lecturers and field trips are planned for students enrolled in the study abroad program. 

 

BUAD 6113 – Strategic & Creative Problem Solving

This course is intended to provide the student with a basis for the analysis and application of creative problem solving solutions for problems that managers typically address in technology-based environments. Emphasis is on fostering creative thinking as a way to approach and solve problems, and analyze our thinking styles. Preparation and presentation of written and oral reports is required. The course offers an opportunity for students to practice communication of ideas and accomplishments through informal discussion, formal presentation, team decision-making and written case analysis. The applied case study problems explored in this course are based upon real and current industry problems.

 

MKTG 6003 Strategic Marketing

Strategic Marketing provides students with an overview of the marketing discipline and a framework that presents marketing as a value creation process. Participants learn how to evaluate marketplace potential and risk from the perspective of the entity's unique ability to develop and deliver goods and services of meaningful customer value. Students participate in classroom presentations, discussions, team problem solving, and in-depth analysis of a series of real-life marketing situations with a diverse range of entities and industries. The course explores the principal concepts and tools of contemporary marketing management, from market segmentation and product positioning to the design of distribution channels and communications strategy, in order to maximize the value delivered to customers. A Strategic Marketing Plan will be required.

 

 

Campania region surrounding Sorrento possess an immensely important architectural heritage that extends back to the age of Homer. Within easy reach there are the Greek cities of Paestum and Cuma; the Roman cities of Pompeii, Herculaneum and Puteoli; the Roman villas of Oplonti and Castellamare; the Renaissance and Baroque architecture of Naples; and the traditional Mediterranean townscapes of Ravello, Amalfi, Capri, Ischia and Sorrento itself.


The innumerable cultural assets of the area promise an incomparable learning experience for the serious students of architecture. Field trips to Rome and Cairo as well as a 10 day spring break tour of Athens and the Greek islands are also planned.

Faculty and Alfred College students will travel together in January to Sorrento and, at the end of the term, students will be free to travel independently before returning to the US.

Classes in Sorrento will start in January and end in May.

We are now accepting students from schools of architecture, as well as any students wishing to fulfill liberal arts and humanities requirements while studying and living in a truly unique learning environment.

Sorrento Lingue and Alfred State College offer the American college students what is pheraps the only permanent semester of studies in the South of Italy.

Sorrento program will establish a foundation for lifelong learning, foster an understanding of global culture and better equip the participants to "hit the ground running" after graduation.

The beautiful scenery of the Gulf of Naples and the safe and welcoming city of Sorrento provide the setting for an unforgettable educational experience.

 

Transferring credits through the Alfred State College
is possible for other Universities
